Open-Chest Heart Surgery

Whenever appropriate, our surgeons use the least invasive options, like catheter-based procedures and minimally invasive surgery, to shorten your recovery. Sometimes conditions require open-chest, sometimes called open-heart, surgery instead.

Open surgeries involve larger incisions and the separating of the breastbone. Also called a sternotomy, open-chest surgery requires longer recovery time, although the time varies by the condition being treated and the unique needs of each patient.

Even with this more invasive choice, our surgeons have the experience and training to effect excellent outcomes. You can trust your Northwest Regional Heart & Vascular team to go over the treatment options that meet your needs.

Working together, we’ll advise you on the best option for your situation. We will also go over the risks and benefits of your options, so you can make a truly informed decision.
